Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin Visit Friendship Salem Terrace Residents to Celebrate Virginia
SALEM, VA – Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin will visit Friendship Salem Terrace on Tuesday, June 25th as the senior living community commemorates the day that Virginia joined the union as a commonwealth in 1788.
The Governor will speak to residents and staff members about the importance of “Strengthening the Spirit of Virginia Together.” Delegates Sam Rasoul, Joe McNamara and Joseph Obenchain will also attend the event along with Roanoke City Mayor Sherman Lea, Sr., and Salem Vice-Mayor Jim Wallace. Friendship’s President and CEO Joe Hoff said, “Friendship’s Virginia Day is a chance to honor the rich history and heritage of a state that many of our residents have called home for most of their lives. Celebrating Virginia allows them to reminisce about cherished memories, share stories with fellow residents, and connect with a sense of place that holds deep meaning. It's a reminder that while life chapters may change, the joy of community stays with us always."
Prior to the Governor and First Lady’s visit, Friendship Salem Terrace residents will enjoy Virginia- themed activities including:
• Virginia food tasting
• Educational video: Virginia Explained
• Virginia-related craft activities
• Virginia trivia
Virginia’s role in U.S. history is significant. It was the first chartered colony, with the original 1606 charter including the entire Eastern Seaboard. Virginia was the tenth of the original 13 states to join the Union on June 25, 1788. More U.S. Presidents were born in Virginia than any other state.

With four campuses, the earliest dating back to 1919, Friendship has grown to offer the full continuum of care—independent living, assisted living, home care, outpatient therapy, inpatient rehab, long-term care and Alzheimer’s and memory care. In a time when 4-in-5 residential care facilities are run by for-profit companies, Friendship, as a non-profit, continues to strive to invest profits back into our communities and to focus on being a good neighbor.
