Surefire Ways to Make New Friends in Senior Living

September 10, 2024

The moving truck has gone, the boxes are unpacked, and you or your loved one are settled into their new space. What now? Start making connections in your new community! For some, this may be an exciting prospect, but for the rest of us, it can be hard being the new kid on the block. Luckily, we've got some great tips for you.

How to make friends in senior living as a new resident

  1. Let the senior living community help.

Many senior living communities have new resident ambassadors (or some type of buddy system) to help guide you through your first days. They'll pair you with a person or persons who share similar interests or backgrounds to show you around, introduce you to other residents, and help you feel welcome.

  1. Grab an activity calendar.

Another quick and easy way to make friends in senior living is to start participating in activities. Senior living communities typically have a program director who plans a range of options each month. For example, we offer a full calendar of fun and engaging activities like social events, exercise programs, classes, clubs, live music and entertainment, opportunities for creative expression, game nights, group outings, religious services, volunteer opportunities, and more!

  1. Try something new.

While the activity calendars at most senior living communities are diverse enough to have something for everyone, even if your usual go-to's aren't available this month (you can always request them for the future), we have a solution: try something new! It's the perfect time as you're already enjoying a fresh start; why not adopt a new hobby, learn a new skill, or even approach a familiar task in a different way? This can not only help you make new friends in senior living but also keep your mind sharp!

  1. Volunteer your time.

Nothing brings people together like sharing a common cause. That's why volunteering is a great way to make friends in senior living. The community might have organizations they already work with, or there may be plenty of opportunities in the community to volunteer. Many senior living communities have resident groups that help organize events, for example. Aside from making friends, it's a great way to find renewed purpose and give back as well.

  1. Get a pet.

If you already have a pet, then this is an ideal opportunity to make friends in senior living with other animal lovers. And if you don't, it's definitely worth considering, as pets offer seniors a variety of benefits from their companionship. Many communities have mini dog parks or walking areas, but even if not, you're sure to see residents out and about with their four-legged besties.

  1. Make yourself accessible.

Sometimes, making friends in senior living is about being in the right place at the right time and having an open and friendly attitude. Sure, there will be residents who stop by your new apartment to welcome you, but you're more likely to meet others if you frequent the common areas. For example, grab a book and hang out in the outdoor courtyard. Or, make a point to have at least one meal outside your apartment each day. If the dining room is too intimidating, perhaps shoot for a grab-and-go breakfast or snack in the café. Maybe even come up with a few questions or comments beforehand to break the ice if you're nervous about approaching new people.
